Definition Under the direct supervision of the Animal Control Supervisor, maintains the animal control center; capturing and impounding animals located on patrol or in response to complaints; dispose of certain animals using humane methods; insure quarantine of animals suspected of having rabies and otherwise carry out provisions of the Texas Law pertaining to the control and eradication of rabies and further carry out the provisions of the County Order; and maintain records and reports as directed by the supervisor.
Examples of Important Responsibilities and Duties--Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Assist the Animal Control Supervisor with implementation, administration, and enforcement of County Order and all state laws adopted by the Texas Department of Health establishing minimum standards of rabies control.
Maintain animal shelter, grounds, vehicle and equipment including cleaning and disinfecting cages and yard areas; feeding, watering and categorizing impounded animals; and providing special attention to quarantined animals.
Patrol rural Hood County for stray, vicious or injured animals.
Maintain up-to-date records and file reports on daily activities as directed by supervisor.
In the absence of Animal Control Supervisor, maintain records of cases and funds.
Issue citations, warnings, and complaints.
Remove, impound and care for stray and unwanted animals, returning pets to owners.
Under close supervision, destroy animals as necessary, using humane methods.
Respond to emergency calls, such as animal bites and respond to complaints.
Assist with coordinating providers or services as directed by supervisor.
Assist with collection of fees.
Under supervisor's guidance, communicate with County Attorney, Justice of the Peace, and Sheriff's office.

Qualifications Knowledge of:
The laws and regulations governing the licensing, quarantine and impounding of animals.
Must have organizational and administrative skills.
Conditions of successfully completing probation shall be attainment of basic certification in Animal Control and approval to carry and administer controlled substances.
Ability to:
Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Write routine reports and correspondence.
Speak effectively before the general public or employees of organization.
Perform basic math skills, add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure.
Manage animals.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Ability to develop and maintain cooperative relations with the public.
Experience and Training Guidelines:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
High School diploma or GED At least one year of experience working with animals; or any equivalent combination of experience in Animal Control or related field.
License or Certificate:
A valid Texas Motor Vehicle Operator's license in good standing.
Ability to obtain basic and advanced certifications as an Animal Control Officer by the Texas Department of Health within the first 6 months of employment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions.
The employee frequently works in high, precarious places and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and fumes or airborne particles.
This position has been identified with possible risk of exposure to blood-borne pathogens and/or other various hazards that require immunization against such exposure.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
Physical Conditions:
The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 150 pounds.
